This may be obvious to most, but today I was playing blood gulch and one of the other players had a ping of between 400-500. I asked him to check and possibly correct his high ping, and he did!

He had some stuff downloading from iTunes while he was playing, and it caused his ping to shoot up. He suspended the download, and his ping immediately dropped

Like I said, this may be obvious to most people.....but it is probably overlooked by many who do not realize that downloading files while playing halo can be an issue.

OK, there's a big unknown in your network route, it's only showing hops 1, 2, and 21. So we're working with very limited information. But you can ignore the solid red in hop 2, it just means that router stopped responding to the traceroute packets.

Graph 21 is the Halo server, and ideally it would be all green. Those red lines in there mean you're losing some packets between you and the server. Unfortunately it's hard to tell where they are getting lost... somewhere between 2 and 21... which is a big unknown. But there's not a LOT of red lines, so it's not horrible packet loss.

I'd suggest leaving that running in the background while you play on that server, and if you're noticing lag then check the graph to see if you're getting red lines on the last graph. If it's happening a lot then maybe I should get you to try PingPlotter instead, it might tell us more about the hidden hops.

Ah good, I'm glad to see that PingPlotter is showing the intermediate hops that HLSW didn't in this case, so stick with PingPlotter to monitor the server.

Now you just need to collect more data.

I suggest changing the "Trace Interval" to 1 second (or 2.5 seconds), and "Samples to include" to 100. That will give a more meaningful result.

It looks like there's enough packets being dropped along the route to sometimes cause lag/warping issues in Halo. I can help interpret the results better if you run it for about an hour and then "Save Sample Set..." and PM the file to me. If you do more than 1 server just save each one in its own file.

Then try the suggestions I made for each problem and see if they help.
