Free Online Virus Scans

Unread postby PÕQ~Technut » Tue Dec 16, 2008 4:10 pm

If you think you may have a virus or spyware problem, you could try one of the free online scanners. But use one from a reputable company, because some of the others are actually spyware themselves.

Here's some that come from major reputable anti-virus companies:
(note: most of these detect, but do not repair)

Microsoft:

Symantec

McAfee

Trend Micro

Kaspersky

F-Secure

If you have a specific file you are unsure about, you can upload it to this website and it will scan it using many virus scanners

Scanning in Safe Mode is a great idea. Also, don't forget to turn off System Restore. Lots of little nasties like to hide in there so they can show back up on the next reboot. Turn it back on when your system is clean.

Yep you're right about system restore, I had forgotten about that as I don't use it.

While running virus scans is important do not forget to run Adaware from Lavasoft and Spybot to find the malware and spyware and rootkits. These can be worse than viruses. :shockedgho:

VirusTotal now has a tiny file you can download which allows you to right click the file in question and send it to their server to be instantly analysed by 38 virus scanners.
