Beginning of the End Pt.2
...I am a terrible procrastinator.
"...That's when the snipers attacked..."
"They opened fire right as the dropship circled around and headed off West. The only warning we had was a marine near Jordan losing his head rather messily. Then, beams of energy lanced down all around us. Some found their marks, and the lucky ones were killed instantly. Others were only wounded. Still more of the shots missed completely, sending clods of dirt flying. It didn't matter though: the sheer volume of fire kept us either pinned in cover or running around like a chicken with its head cut off.
"Then, almost as suddenly as it started, the fire ceased. When I warily looked around, many of those who had survived the initial bombing were either dead or dying. I also noticed something else; a shimmer in a particular spot of air. When the shimmer breathed, letting out a cloud of vapor, my suspicions were confirmed. Infiltrators had gotten past Jordan and the other marines, likely using the sniper fire as cover to approach undetected. I looked around, and now noticed three more shimmering areas, moving among the bodies and wreckage. Being careful to not be noticed, I took aim at the nearest one's head with my pistol and fired a trio of bullets. The first two brought down it's shield, and the third gave it a new hole to breathe out of.
"Of course, that brought the attention of the other three, who immediately yelled and charged towards me, either disengaging or rendering their cloaks useless. Those few survivors who could still fight opened fire on them, and the trio went down. A few seconds later, Jordan reported that the enemy army was getting awfully close, and would be in firing range in less than a minute.
"I told him to come down from the tower and get ready to leave. Then, I looked around for RJ. 'RJ, where are ya?' I said. 'We need to get out of here.' Suddenly, I heard the unmistakable guttural roar of an elite, followed shortly thereafter by a shotgun blast. I turned around to find a now de-cloaked and very dead elite on the ground, with RJ standing over him, shotgun still trailing a few wisps of smoke. 'Found your shotgun, Chief, but not much else. A few sidearms and some spare clips, that's about it.'
'It'll have to do,' I told him, reloading the shotgun. 'We've got to get moving.'
"And with that, we headed out the west gate with what few survivors of the attack on Alpha base there were and made for the rendezvous point. Snipers harried us for a little while, killing some of the stragglers and wounding a few more. We could not wait for them, and they knew it, so those who couldn't keep up we gave a spare clip or two, in exchange for their dog tags.
"After running a few hundred feet, we heard the sounds of their weapons firing, then silence."
"..Wait, you're saying you left them... to DIE?" Rex asked.
"Yes. I did. I'm not proud of it, and if I cold have saved even one without compromising our own lives, I would have. So before you go calling me a heartless bast**d, take into account that they KNEW that it was either them or everyone and they accepted that fact.
"The fact is, Rex, had they not, none of us would likely be here, and the Covenant would have complete and total control of the planet and whatever technologies it may hold. They were some of the best d**m soldiers I've ever met."
To be continued....
Notes: Well, there you have it. I'm a terrible procrastinator, but better late than never, right?
