On Hostile Turf Pt.2It's about dang time...
A few minutes and several miles south of the Elephant, Hazard and Rex (with Serina still in his head) make their way into hostile territory.
"Alright. This is as far as we can risk driving."
"You climb one of those big trees if you can," Hazard said, gesturing after putting his rifle on his mongoose. "I'm going in."
"Won't you need that gun?"
"Not likely," Hazard said, activating his advanced camouflage system. "plus, the camo doesn't work on handheld weapons."*
"....Why don't I get one of those?"
"because you weren't 'transferred' to ONI."
A few minutes later, Rex called Hazard from his perch.
"Alright, Haz. I'm in position. Thermals are picking up something just ahead, but interference from something underground is preventing Serina from analyzing it."
"Understood," Hazard said, peeking over a log. "There's a path ahead. They definitely travel this way. Patrols are likely as well."
A quarter hour later (but only a few hundred feet further south) :
"Yes. They definitely have several vehicles patrolling the area. I count at least three pairs of ghosts, at four minute intervals," Hazard said, peering out from cover. "Looks like we've got a hub of activity ahead."
"It's a grav lift!** This must be where they ferry troops and supplies up and down from the cruiser. This could be our ticket off of the surface!"
*surely it's guarded? I can only see the spires from here,* Rex said over the radio.
"Yes. There are two guard turrets here. Shades, not those crappy jackal spinoffs. Only one's manned right now though."
"There's also mister big, mean, and nasty here. Looks like this elite major directs the traffic through this hub. I also see a jackal lazing about....Hold on.... might have some bad news."
"There's a chieftain somewhere down here. Probably a minor one, but still not one we want to tango with too closely."
"I'm picking up one more structure south of your location. Find out what it is," Rex called from his perch.
"Well, I'm pretty certain an aerial insertion is out of the question."
To be continued... (hopefully rather soon.)
*At the time this took place, Spartans had yet to acquire shielding hardware (which wrapped around weapons as well. Since covenant stealth tech integrates the camo into the shielding, current UNSC hardware only camouflages itself (recon units 1 and 2 [from long ago] had weapons large enough to support their own camo hardware. Hazard does not.)
**"That's not a grav lift!" you might be saying. Well, that's true. But I'm allowed to use it because (as of right now) there is no "grav lift" set. Plus, it (once again) takes place BEFORE the events of Halo CE. Grav lifts do what they want!
